Care guide

To help maintain your rug’s beauty and durability, please be aware of these guidelines for cleaning, stain prevention, regular upkeep and to keep your warranty intact.

Using premium natural wool fibres and crafted by hand, Susu rugs are designed to withstand daily life – we understand that comes with spills and wear.

When you first receive your rug, it is normal for there to be fold marks or lines, this is because they must be rolled tightly for shipping. Please allow 2-4 weeks for these to settle.

1. Regular Vacuuming

  • Frequency: Vacuum your wool rug regularly, ideally once a week, to remove dirt and debris. Use a vacuum cleaner with a suction-only setting, avoiding beater bars or brushes that can damage the fibres.
  • Technique: Vacuum in multiple directions to capture particles effectively without pulling the fibres.

2. Spot Cleaning

  • Immediate Action: For spills, act quickly. Start by removing any solids in a scooping motion, avoiding pushing them further into the rug. Blot the area with a clean, white cloth to absorb as much liquid as possible. Avoid rubbing, as this can spread the stain or damage the fibres.
  • Solution: Mix mild dish soap with cool water to create a cleaning solution. Dampen a cloth in the solution, blot the stain gently, and then blot with plain water to rinse.
  • Drying: Pat the area dry with a clean towel and allow it to air dry completely. Do not use heat to speed up drying.

3. Stain Removal for Common Stains:

  • Food and DrinkStart by removing any solids in a scooping motion, avoiding pushing them further into the rug. Blot and clean with a solution of mild dish soap and water. Rinse and dry as mentioned above.
  • Grease Stains: Sprinkle cornstarch or talcum powder to absorb the grease, wait for 15 minutes, then vacuum. Follow with a mild soap solution.
  • Ink or Dye: Use a specialized wool cleaner, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Test First: Always test any cleaning solution on a small, inconspicuous area of the rug before applying it to the stain to ensure it won’t alter the colour.

4. Sun Care

  • Avoid Direct Sunlight: Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause fading. Use curtains or blinds to protect the rug, or rearrange furniture to minimize sun exposure.
  • Rotate Regularly: Rotate your rug every six months to ensure even wear and fading.

5. Professional Cleaning

  • Have your wool rug professionally cleaned every 1-3 years, depending on foot traffic and wear. Professionals will use techniques suitable for wool that maintain the integrity of the fibres without harsh chemicals.

6. Handling and Placement

  • Avoid Heavy Furniture: Place felt pads under furniture legs to prevent crushing the fibres. Avoid dragging heavy objects across the rug, as this can cause damage.
  • Use Rugs Underlay: A non-slip rug underlay not only keeps the rug in place but also adds cushioning and protects the underside.

7. General Maintenance

  • Pilling: If pilling occurs (formation of small balls on the surface), use a fabric shaver to carefully remove them.
  • Storage: If you need to store your rug, clean it first, roll it (do not fold) and store it in a dry, dark place to avoid moisture and light.

8. Troubleshooting

  • Loss of Shape: If your rug loses its shape, gently reshape it and ensure it's laid flat.
  • Odors: If the rug develops an odour, ensure it's clean and dry. Air it out in a well-ventilated space.
